20 Miles of Wire Rope in Chicago's Board of Trade Building


On the southwestern extremity of Chicago's busy Loop District stands the Board of Trade Building-a skyscraper of 609 feet. This building runs 174 feet east and west on Jackson Boulevard and 240 feet north and south on La Salle street. It's 44 stories were made practical for the transaction of business by 23 Otis elevators. All elevator ropes-hoisting, compensating and governor ropes are of Roebling manufacture. Of practical significance is the fact that in the majority of buildings of every description, elevators are Roebling equipped. It indicates the faith which elevator manufacturers and building owners have placed in Roebling Wire Rope.

Of the approximately 600,000 square feet of floor space, 70,000 square feet are occupied by the Chicago Board of Trade- a suggestion of the important place this organization plays in the business of this city. The balance- 530,000 is available as rentable area.

The clock, and important element of the architectural scheme has a face of 13 feet in diameter.
